The prestigious 2014 Asia Catering Competition Champions Team was held at Yokohama, Japan. The grand competition drew all the Asian countries’ attention and Taiwan was no exception. Taiwan sent the talented student chef, Jie Sheng Wang, from Overseas Education Institution of Vanung University. Wang adopted the popular hometown fruit, mango, as his main design idea and created his champion cake, Maladie du Pays, as we all know it means home sickness. He presented this prize to Vanung University to show his gratitude to his teacher and school for giving him this chance and providing a complete training.
Before attending the classes at Vanung, he had no idea about culinary. Although he has interest in it, he couldn’t get a mentor that is willing to offer training. Thanks to Vanung University, he is given sufficient knowledge to develop his excellent culinary ability. Special thanks to his mentor, Min Lee Chen, who tirelessly guides him day and night.
Ms. Chen is a very demanding trainer, but she is very kind to those international student and show them around Taiwan in order to make them feel home. Due to this, Wang was inspired by the abundant tropical fruit that Taiwan has and generated his champion piece. The sweet and soft flavor of mango reminded him of home and family.
President Chung was delighted to receive this great award because the devotion he put in the Food and Beverage Department is now rewarded. The department has top-of-the-line facility and complete faculty to provide any kinds of training for both Vanung’s local students and international students. In addition to excellent equipment, the school also offer funding and scholarship to support students to join more international competition. “Only when the students are given more chances to practice with people from other countries will help them improve their knowledge and broaden their vision” said by President Chung.
